I'm totally new to this blogging thing, all constructive advice most welcome!
Confession time, I've got a bit of a passion for grotty teens.
Trying to understand my own adolescent turbulence has let me to read about, write about and watch every documentary possible about the complex workings of the teen mind.
There is child, a child who seems to have a real handle on the world, a nice child with such fantastic insight you'd vote for them to run the country. The child is caring and sweet, empathetic and engaging.
Then it hits, puberty, rapid emotional development (which it seems hard to believe now that the eloquent child has been reduced to a monosyllabic moron) rapid physical development, hair sprouting, nasty smells, self fascination (yet not quite fascinating enough to wash).
It's a bizarre phenomenon. Largely undocumented until the 20th century, the adolescent phase.
I know people can find teens a bit threatening and rude and self absorbed (something the media really hasn't helped with) but I can't help but see them as vulnerable, under nourished and lost. I'm no soft touch, firm rules and clear boundaries all the way. I see them as large toddlers and think they should be treated that way too. Lots of love and nurturing, firm rules with clear consequences and most importantly, the opportunity to start fresh everyday.
These are all but words, over the next little while I'd love to talk about some of the issues the teens I work with and have worked with in the past have faced.
As I mentioned I'm new to the world of blogging, bloggers and the blogged, would really like to hear from those who have a keen interest or any strong opinions of the teen condition. Teachers, parents, youth workers, teens, those who fear and/or celebrate them.
